Images: Solar flare heads toward Earth

The biggest solar flare on record was recorded at 4:51 p.m. EDT on April 2, 2001. A coronal mass ejection was hurtled at a speed of 720 kilometers per hour away from the sun. Fortunately, it missed Earth.
