In 1983, George Lucas set out to ensure that audiences really hear the special effects his team had carefully crafted for Star Wars. Sound had been getting lost in lobby and air conditioner buzz. He founded the company THX, which took aim at the decrepit state of theater sound systems. Audiences of THX-certified theaters have loved him for it. Now his company is hearing the call for high-quality communication between digital content and the consumer electronics on which it gets played.
