Photos: Melting glacier uncovers island

This map shows the current melting rate of Greenland's glacier. In 2000 NASA said there was a net loss of approximately 51 cubic kilometers of ice per year in a conservative estimate. However recent studies show that the rate is increasing. In January 2007 The New York Times quoted University Center of Svalbard professor Carl Egede Boggild who said the melting rate could be as high as 80 cubic miles per year.
