Photos: Anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's first space flight
Gagarin rode aboard this Vostok 1 capsule. His adventure was dangerous and almost ended in disaster when his capsule did not separate from the final stage of the rocket until just before reentry.
Soviet rocket scientists feared that the capsule could not be slowed down enough to safely land a human so Gagarin was forced to eject from the Vostok 1 during reentry and use his own parachute.
