Images: American mass consumption, by the numbers
The images are part of "Running the Numbers: An American Self-Portrait," a series of prints by photographer Chris Jordan that aims to examine modern American culture through the "austere lens of statistics." The pictures are on display in Jordan's Seattle gallery, and he has replicated the series on his Web site.
He portrays examples of American consumption first in images of aggregate totals, such as this shot, which depicts 426,000 cell phones, the number Jordan says are retired by Americans every day, and then in actual size.
