Cobra NavOne 4500

The New York Times' David Pogue reviewed five GPS devices that met his three general requirements: they are all tiny (about the size of an index card), self-contained, and battery-operated, "so you can take it hiking or biking when it's not plugged into your car's cigarette lighter."

First up was this Cobra NavOne 4500, which sells for about $520. Pogue calls it probably "the chattiest GPS unit ever made" based on the extent of its voice prompts, which he says makes it easier to use than its rivals.

But, he said, the navigation screen is pretty cluttered, the NavOne's processor might not be up to task, and the Cobra's feature list is shorter than its rivals.
