Photos: Antarctica in HD
To show off this new view of Antarctica, the USGS, the British Antarctic Survey, and NASA created the Landsat Image Mosaic of Antarctica from more than 1,000 Landsat images. This tool will let users scan anywhere on the continent.
The white circle in the middle of Antarctica shows the area above 82.5 degrees, which is out of range due to the orbit of the satellite. Users have an option to fill in the space with previous MODIS images--in lower resolution, of course.
Researchers pieced together more than a thousand images from three years of Landsat satellite observations to create LIMA.
