A 30-kilometer-long (18.6-mile) crevasse that was first noticed in the 1980s is slowly separating the lower section of this ice shelf near the McMurdo station. Snow and sea ice is filling the crack as it expands. When it hits the land on the right side, an iceberg will be formed.
