The star gadget of the holiday shopping season this year is without question the portable GPS device. Of the top 15 sellers on all of Pricegrabber this weekend, four of them were GPS units. And by Monday afternoon on Amazon.com, five of the top 15 electronics items were navigation devices. Though GPS units have been dangled in front of us by consumer electronics companies, this year was when consumers finally bit. "Last year, Black Friday introduced U.S. consumers to GPS systems. It had been growing (in popularity), but they were relatively still expensive," said Stephen Baker, of The NPD Group, an analyst firm that tracks retail spending. "We saw the first salvo of low-cost GPS last holiday. This Black Friday we've seen lots of products under $100, (and they are) getting into the under-$150 sweet spot. (Consumers) understand now what it is and what value the proposition is," he said.
