Olympus 790SW
With hundreds of models on the market, it can be tough to get your digital camera to stand out--heck, it can even be hard not to be overwhelmed by the 28 models Canon sells right now. One strategy employed by mainstream manufacturers and smaller rivals: specialize.

Although the digital revolution has rewritten many rules of photography, the idea of trying to carve out a niche is nothing new--one CNET colleague likes the Konica Kanpai that would rotate toward the bursts of sound such as laughter or cheers and take snapshots.

Waterproof cameras are one specialty product that made the jump into the Digital Age. The Olympus Stylus 790SW (pictured) looks fairly ordinary, but it's designed to put up with unpleasant conditions. It's waterproof to depths of 10 feet, works at 14 degrees Fahrenheit and can withstand a 5-foot drop. Other waterproof models include the exotic-looking Sanyo Xacti E1 and Pentax's Optio W30.
