Clever Homes front
Prefabricated, modular and kit homes are being retooled for the 21st century and sold as sustainable alternatives to traditional wood-frame, "stick-built" housing. These made-to-order dwellings can be found in high-end and shoestring-hip options.

This 3,000-square-foot abode from CleverHomes was erected in April using Structural Insulated Panels (SIPS), considered a green building material. Eco-friendly options include water reclamation and the use of alternative sources of energy. Each house from the company costs between $200 to $300 per square foot, including design, materials and assembly. CleverHomes pepper the West and East coasts.
